Q. What would the ERPC think of this statement: "We should regard baptized infants as savingly united to Christ until such time as they apostatize"? A. We believe this statement is un-Biblical. It is doubly flawed: 1.) No one is savingly united to Christ by baptism. Salvation is by belief in the person and work of our Savior, exercising faith which is itself the gift of God. That is what saves us, not baptism. 2.) No one is saved “until such time as they apostatize.” The person who has truly become a child of God by faith in Christ, being effectually called by God and set apart by the Holy Spirit, cannot ever totally or finally fall away from the state of grace. Because of the immutability of God’s decree, that person will most certainly persevere to the end. [WCF Chapter 17, affirming passages such as Philippians 1:6; 2 Peter 1:10; Romans 8:28-30; John 10:28-29; 1 John 3:9 and 5:18; and 1 Peter 1:5-9.]
