Q. Why didn't the people who are forming the ERPC join another existing denomination? A. Some of the individuals and congregations that have already left the OPC and PCA have affiliated with other small denominations. But most of those denominations hold distinctives (such as exclusive psalmody, the requirement that all ministers be postmillennialists, or their view of the ordained offices) that would have made joining those denominations difficult for many others. We appreciate our brethren in those denominations, but we do not wish to be bound by their chosen distinctives. Our draft Form of Government leaves many matters in the hands of the local congregation which are mandated distinctives in other existing denominations The ERPC will, for example, leave the use of the psalms to the judgment of the local congregation, and a minister’s eschatological position to his own judgment, as long as it is not clearly out of accord with the Scriptures and the Westminster Standards.
